Kaunakakai

In Kaunakakai (pronounced Ka-na-ka-kai) you will find everything you need to enjoy your stay on Molokai, on the three block long Ala Malama Ave.

For groceries you will find several markets, but NO super-markets. You will want to shop at either Friendly Market or Misaki’s. Here you will not only find the basics found in your own local grocery store back home, but also some of the freshest seafood caught in the pacific. If you’re staying for awhile we’d also recommend the Molokai Mango Café/Store, across the street from Friendly Market, where you can pick up items in bulk. Molokai Wines ‘N’ Spirits, down the street, has a fine selection of wines, liquors and specialty cheeses in their deli case, and at Pascua’s General Store you can run in for a quick item or two, to snack on while you hit the road for a day of sight-seeing. If your sweet tooth is calling, don’t forget to stop into Kanemitsu Bakery where they make fresh pastries and breads, well known throughout the islands.

For personal necessities try Molokai Drugs around the corner from the post office, as well as Mango Mart next to Molokai Mango Café/Store. Both carry a wide variety of items, and Molokai Drugs also has a pharmacy.

While on Molokai you will want to taste some of the best local Hawaiian flavors imaginable, so please consider sampling some of our favorites:

  • Sashimi - sliced raw fish (generally Ahi Tuna) served with cabbage and wasabi (hot horseradish mixed with soyu)

  • Mae Ploy’s Sweet Chili Sauce - spicy sweet, great for seafood and dipping - found in the spice isle

  • Ono Hawaiian Seasoning – All in one natural flavor enhancer

  • Molokai’s own Purple Sweet Potato - you’ve seen and tasted nothing like it. Bake and enjoy this purple sweetie!

  • Smoked Marlin - (like jerky, but so much better) located in the meat dept.

  • Hawaii’s Original Taro Pancake Mix - one of our favorite breakfasts!

  • Papaya Seed Salad Dressing - delicious beyond belief!

  • Apple Bananas –  stubby, plump,  and oh so good!

  • Maui Onions – sweet hotties!

  • Island Pineapples – juicy

  • Macadamia Nuts - several seasoned flavors available including chocolate covered

  • Molokai Coffee - locally grown

  • Wasabi Peas - dried, hot and delicious!

  • Shave Ice - the Hawaiian snowcone

  • Locally grown Papayas – sweetest you’ve ever had!

If souvenirs are on your list, there are many island shops to check out, these are just a few:

  • -Molokai Fish & Dive is packed with everything a person needs to have fun in the tropical sun. They carry the largest selection of authentic Molokai designed T-shirts and souvenirs on the entire island. Their rental department is the one-stop location for booking Molokai activities and tours on Molokai.

  • -Kamakana Fine Arts Gallery, showcases original fine art, Hawaiian cultural art, and finely crafted handwork from over 150 Molokai resident artists.

  • -Denise’s Polynesian Plus Gift Shop, just around the corner from Kamakana Gallery, specializes in unique gift baskets, and also exceptional handcrafted items including, clothing, woodworks, ceramics, and jewelry.  Denise travels to neighboring islands on extensive buying trips to bring the best Hawaiian crafts to Molokai. Her second gift shop, called Denise’s Baskets and More, is centrally located in Kualapu'u, (pronounced Koo-all-a-poo-oo) and she also has a Furniture Outlet there, where she sells unfinished furniture from Oregon.

More, fine souvenir shopping can be found in downtown Kaunakakai at Imamura’s, Lourdes and The Molokai Surf Shop, not to mention several other great stores.

If you are unable to find that special something, to take home from Molokai in Kaunakakai, then head to Hotel Molokai east of town. They have a small souvenir shop just off of their outdoor lobby. You might also find what you’re looking for in the gift shop located at the Molokai Coffee Plantation in Kualapu’u, where they sell everything from locally grown coffee beans to coffee bag back packs, and jewelry.

Maunaloa

Formerly the Dole Plantation Village, Maunaloa is a lovely town set atop the hills overlooking Kaiwi Channel and Oahu. Maunaloa is the nearest town to the condo at approx 13 miles, and is therefore very convenient for shopping. Here you can pick up groceries at the Maunaloa General Store, where they have choice cuts of beef, and everything else necessary for a home cooked meal. Open 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. Closed Sunday.

You will find wonderful souvenirs at the Big Wind Kite Factory, where they make incredible kites, and carry fabulous items from Bali. We never walk out of this shop empty handed.

The gift shop at Molokai Ranch also has a wide variety of specialty items, including beautiful island attire for men and women, plus jewelry, and fun island treasures to take home and remind you of your wonderful time spent on Molokai.

Kaluakoi Resort

West End Sundries, within easy walking distance of the condo, carries snacks, ice cream, condiments and food and beverage items. They also get fresh Molokai breads on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This is the friendly “convenience store” of Kaluakoi Resort. They also have a selection of island made T-shirts. They are open every day from 8-6pm.

Right next door to West End Sundries is another gift shop called, A Taste of Molokai.  They carry Tommy Bahama Island Attire and many other well known brands as well as jewelry and T-shirts.

Kualapu’u

There is a market on the corner across from Kamuela’s Cookhouse, and it carries a little bit of everything.

East Side

The Neighborhood Store "N" Counter at mile marker 13 is the only place on this side of the island to stop for snacks or groceries. You can also order take-out food from their outdoor dining counter.

We guarantee you will enjoy shopping the unique gift and craft shops on the Friendly Island of Molokai. In fact, you just might find that you need a spare luggage bag to carry your entire collection of treasures home!
